Borromeo String Quartet
About
Celebrating 35 years on the world’s leading stages, the Borromeo String Quartet is acclaimed for thrilling performances and for pairing fresh readings of the classical canon with a deep commitment to 20th- and 21st-century music. Ensemble-in-residence at New England Conservatory for over three decades and at Taos School of Music since 2005, the quartet is also quartet-in-residence at the Heifetz International Music Institute, where first violinist Nicholas Kitchen is artistic director. Internationally, the Borromeo has appeared at major venues including Carnegie Hall, and it maintains a long relationship with Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Equally committed to education, the quartet leads residencies worldwide for students and faculty, and works with the Library of Congress exploring manuscripts and instrument collections. A technology pioneer, it was the first string quartet to use laptops on stage and among the first classical ensembles to produce its own live recordings and video — often illuminating the creative process through talks with projected handwritten manuscripts.
